JOHANNESBURG, 24 April 2008 (PlusNews) - In less than two months, government officials and AIDS activists from around the world will convene in New York to review the global HIV/AIDS response.National progress reports, submitted earlier this year, will be compared to targets adopted by the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS) in 2001.

Based on a review of the reports from Eastern and Southern Africa, the regions worst affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis, experts from UNAIDS have already concluded that despite significant progress in areas such as treatment, many of the UNGASS goals are still far from being reached.

"The data presented by countries confirms that overall the rate of progress in expanding access to all services is failing to keep pace with the expansion of the epidemic in this region," said Mark Stirling, director of UNAIDS for Eastern and Southern Africa.

On June 9th , in advance of the UN High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, there will be a “HIV-TB Global Leaders' Forum.” As civil society groups, it is critical that we use this opportunity to articulate our demands for bold action and specific, concrete outcomes: where’s the plan, where’s the money, where’s the programming on the ground? TB, despite being curable, remains the leading cause of death amongst PLWHA. Public health and human rights demand that urgent action is taking now to stop the unconscionable death of PLWHA due to a curable disease.

Women and girls urgently need strong leadership and accountability by governments for effective and sustainable solutions to the
AIDS pandemic that meet their needs. Universal Access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, must be achieved by 2010. The United Nations High Level Meeting is held at a critical moment when all governments must show commitment and apply concrete resources and action that will achieve Universal Access by 2010.

Young people have an important role to play and significant contributions to make in addressing all aspects of HIV and AIDS. The 2008 United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV and AIDS was one in a series of opportunities for young people to interact with global government and civil soviety to ensure that the United Nations (UN) member states are held accountable for progress made toward the goal of universal access by 2010.
