HIV and AIDS Programmes and Financial Allocations Continue to fail women

(New York) - On its one year anniversary, the Women Won't Wait. End HIV and Violence against Women. NOW! Campaign remains concerned that women's rights still occupy the margins of HIV and AIDS strategies and funding. The campaign was launched on International Women's Day-March 8, 2007-to demand that policy makers and donors integrate responses to violence against women in global and national AIDS programmes and allocate resources to these responses.

Declaration released from first ever IPU Meeting on HIV/AIDS

In late 2007, the first ever Inter Parliamentarians Union (IPU) Global Parliamentary Meeting on HIV/AIDS took place in Manila. As a result of this meeting a declaration was made in which parliamentarians committed to take strong leadership on HIV and AIDS especially within the areas of stigma and discrimination and access to affordable treatment.

Update on Second Round of Negotiations through IGWG

Negotiations to ensure affordable medicines between Representatives of Ministries of Health and the drug industry in Geneva were suspended after delegates ran out of time. The goal of the second round negotiations, held through the Intergovernmental Working Group for Public Health,Innovation and Intellectual Property (IGWG) in early November is to create a strategy to promote research and development of affordable medicines, while at the same time respecting the intellectual property rights of pharmaceutical companies.

Civil society calls new UK Global Fund pledge ‘a pittance’.
(BERLIN) On the eve of a replenishment meeting of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, civil society warned other G8 donors not to follow the poor example set by the UK, who today announced their contribution to the Global Fund—an 8-year pledge of USD 2 billion. When divided evenly by year, the UK pledge would only amount to 20% more than the UK’s current funding level.

Estonia: A budget-freeze aimed at social needs for 2008

PUBLIC APPEAL: On the 20th June 2007 an article appeared in the media concerning the Estonian Governments plans to reduce the funding allocations for 2008 for the care, treatment and support of people living with HIV and AIDS. The result of this action would be to reduce the commitment to HIV services up to seven times less than had been previously planned. It was said that the resources should be allotted to other social areas such as children's homes, disability services and emergency workers.

Public Appeal to the Government of The Republic of Estonia

We call upon the Estonian Government to live up to your commitments made in the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS in the Special Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2001 and the UNGASS + 5 Political Declaration of 2006, with respect to the commitment to the Universal Access to prevention, treatment, care and support.
