OVER 1,500 AIDS ACTIVISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD DEMONSTRATE OUTSIDE UN SPECIAL SESSION

Hundreds of protesters marched the streets of Manhattan today to pressure governments to provide greater leadership. Amidst the tense negotiations taking place at the UN High Level AIDS Review Meeting 2006, activists around the world gathered together to voice their solidarity. Sipho Mthathi, head of South Africa’s Treatment Action Campaign, took to the mobile stage and demanded that the African leaders stick to their commitments made in Abuja a month ago, and the issues such as rights, violence against women and concrete goals for action are given attention. A number of prominent US activists also spoke. See document below for more information.

Letters from Zambian children delivered to UN delegation at AIDS meetin

New York, 1 June (EAA):
“We ask you to keep your promise because a lot of people are dying”, writes Namwene Phiri in a letter directed to her government leaders. Phiri’s letter was one of over 400 from Zambian young people presented today to Zambia’s Foreign Minister, the Honorable Ronnie Shikapwasha, at the United Nations’ Review and High Level Meeting on AIDS.
