UN General Assembly Meeting
New York, June 2005
A High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS took place at United Nations headquarters on 2 June 2005. The gathering was an opportunity for an interim technical review of the 2005 goals set out in the Declaration of Commitment, and also contributed to the Summit of the United Nations being held in September 2005 to review the UN Millennium Declaration.
The UN Secretary General released his report assessing the situation. Despite encouraging signs that the AIDS epidemic was beginning to be contained in a small but growing number of countries, the overall epidemic continued to expand. Compared to previous years, there were more new infections - roughly 4.9 million - and more AIDS deaths - 3.1 million - in 2004. Much of the world is at risk of falling short of the targets set out in the Declaration of Commitment.
The High Level Meeting included roundtables on:
- resources
- prevention
- treatment, care and support
- human rights and gender
- orphans and children made vulnerable by HIV and AIDS
A summary of these discussions is available.
