What is being done to stop these restrictions?

Organisations and individuals have long spoken out about these restrictions that can make organising international AIDS meetings and conferences especially hard, if not impossible. Since 1991, the International AIDS Society has refused to hold the biennial International AIDS Conference in any country with short-term travel restrictions. Momentum for action on these restriction grew in 2007 when the Global Fund hosted a board meeting in China and had to negotiate directly with the Chinese government on travel restrictions. Due to this, the Global Fund asked UNAIDS to create a task team to review evidence about practices and make recommendations based on evidence on how we can all come together to eliminate travel restrictions.

The Task Team on HIV-related Travel Restrictions had its first meeting in February of 2008. For more information on the task team, click.
