Civil Society Representatives for the Civil G8 Dialogue in Japan Announced
Below you will find an announcement from the the Civil G8 Dialogue Selection Committee regarding the civil society representatives chosen to attend the Civil G8 Dialogue meeting in the run up to the G8 summit.The Civil G8 Dialogue is the meeting between global civil society and the G8 Sherpas to discuss the agenda of the G8 Summit. Health is one of the main agenda items of the G8, and it will be one of the main topics to be discussed in the event.
Firstly, we appreciate for you very much for your attention to the Civil G8 Dialogue, and the selection process of the Civil Society Representatives on HIV/AIDS for the event. In response to the call we received 13 application forms in total. These broke down as follows- 2 were from developed countries and 11 from developing countries, including 6 from Kenya, 3 from Zambia, 1 from Nigeria and 1 from India.
The Selection Committee examined the application forms with the help of Ms. Felicita Hikuam, the WAC staff person in South Africa, with the following criteria.
a. the person can represent the voices of people living with/affected by HIV/AIDS and wider civil society community working on HIV/AIDS
b. the person has sufficient information and expertise on global HIV/AIDS policy
c. the person has certain expertise or experience on G8 advocacy linked to HIV/AIDS
d. (essential) the person has the capacity to express himself/herself in UN official languages, ideally English
We also considered if the applicants could represent people living with/affected by HIV/AIDS beyond their country and gender.
After careful examination, we came to the following decision:
- Ms. Olayide Akanni was selected as the civil society representative from Developing Countries for the Civil G8 Dialogue.
- Ms. Paola Giuliani was selected as the civil society representative from Developed Countries for the Civil G8 Dialogue.
The Selection Committee recommends that the two representatives have an opportunity to collect views from other CS colleagues prior to the event and that they report back on the results of the dialogue.
