Global AIDS Week of Action 2007

The Global AIDS Week of Action 20-26 May, 2007 is now over. See below for information on what happened around the world.

AIDS Week actions took place across Asia and the Pacific at both the country level, regional and local level.

Some of the highlights of this years activities include a candlelight memorial in Sierra Leone with over 500 people taking part. At the end of the memorial activists dropped their candles, so they would burn out together, this was to symbolise the burning of the stigma, discrimination and complacency surrounding the disease.

On the Pacific island of Guam, activists created memorial quilts in the local language, Chuukese. These quilts were displayed during the week to remember those in the community who have died from AIDS.

In Italy, Malawian activist Peter McBride spoke to an audience, which included members of parliament, about the challenges which positive people in Malawi face. He thanked Italy for its support in the fight against the pandemic but encouraged them to do more, including more money for the Global Fund.
